Becoming a Freemason – Just Ask

So, you think you might want to be a Freemason and you are not sure how to go about it; well, it’s much easier than you might think.

But before we explain how you go about it let’s make something really clear – you really can apply to join.  The idea that you ‘have to be invited to become a member’ is not correct.

We also need to say that to become a Freemason you must be at least 18  years of age and you must be of good character.  However, there is a University Scheme that will accept membership at 18 (please visit the Grand Lodge of England website).

So what do you need to do?

First step –  if you know someone who is a Freemason, just go up to them and ask “Are you a Freemason” – it really is that simple.  If they are, they will tell you and be very happy to explain what you need to do to be considered for membership.  If you don’t know anyone who is a Freemason, or are unsure, make an enquiry to us using our contact form https://alwarestoch.co.uk/secretary-contact/ or contact the Provincial Grand Lodge Hampshire & IOW for more information.  All enquiries are treated on a confidential basis.

Second step – If you like what you hear and want to take matters a little further, your ‘new friend’ can make arrangements for you to meet members of his Lodge in an informal atmosphere such as a pub, coffee shop, Masonic Hall or even someone’s home; it could even be your own home. You and your partner can ask all the questions you can think of, and the Freemasons you meet will do their very best to answer them openly and honestly.  Do bear in mind that there might be some things they can’t tell you – yet!

Third step – if you chose for us to meet you and the meeting went well, you and your partner are happy and you want to know more and progress your application; so begins the paperwork completed by yourself and the secretary.

Fourth step – You will be invited to a meeting where a more formal chat takes place.  Don’t worry, this is only to make sure you really are keen to join and that you understand the level of commitment required of a member; after all you wouldn’t want to join if nothing happened – would you?

Final step – You understand and accept the principles on which Freemasonry is based and you are able to give the time and financial commitment you will be expected to make; and are now ready to make new friends and become a Freemason.
